Sakura no Ki ni Narou (MV)

"Sakura no Ki ni Narou" (桜の木になろう; Let's Become a Cherry Tree) is the 20th major-label single (22nd overall) released by AKB48. It was released in five versions: a limited type-A CD+DVD edition, a regular type-A CD+DVD edition, a limited type-B CD+DVD edition, a regular type-B CD+DVD edition, and a limited CD-only theater edition. The limited type-A and type-B editions came with a national handshaking event ticket, while the theater edition came with a "Sakura no Ki ni Narou" handshaking event ticket and one member picture at random. The title track was used as the theme song for the drama Sakura Kara no Tegami~AKB48 Sorezore no Sotsugyou Monogatari~, which starred all AKB48 members. The single sold 655,344 copies on its first day of release, which is the most that any artist has sold in a single day since Oricon started reporting daily sales in March 2009.

Trivia

  • After Chance no Junban, this single comes back with the same release pattern Beginner introduced. There are 2 Limited Editions and 2 Regular Editions, with the National Handshaking Events being part of the Limited Editions only.
  • This single was released exactly 1 year after the last "sakura themed" single, Sakura no Shiori.
  • Following Chance no Junban, the Theater Edition will once again include a new song. This brings the total of new songs included in this single to five. The new song was once again a Team Kenkyuusei Original Song.
  • Once again, recognized artists were in charge of the artwork of this single. The covers were designed by artist Morimoto Chie (森本千絵), while the PV was directed by the famous director Koreda Hirokazu (是枝裕和).
  • This single was originally planned to have a 21-nin Senbatsu, but was changed later on to the same 16-nin Senbatsu used for Beginner.
  • The first time in AKB48 had included the exact same Members as Senbatsu for 2 Singles consecutively.
  • This single outsold Beginner's first week, marking it as the highest first week numbers for AKB48 release so far.
  • The single sold 655,344 copies on its first day of release. At the time this record was the most that any artist has sold in a single day, since Oricon started reporting daily sales in March 2009.
  • This was Oku Manami's last single before graduating AKB48.
  • This is the second AKB48 single after Beginner to sell 1,000,000 copies.
