- On January 9, 2019, NHK News reported that two men were arrested for allegedly assaulting Yamaguchi Maho outside her own home in Niigata on December 8, 2018, but were later released without charges. According to NHK, the two suspects grabbed Yamaguchi's face as she was entering her home.
- This was confirmed by Maho on her SHOWROOM show, telling her fans that all the group members' personal data were leaked. She confirmed the assault and that she feared for her life as it took place.
- She posted more details about the story on her Twitter account, denouncing the management's inaction on the issue and asking for clearance on the matter.
- During a January 12th stage performance, Maho apologized to the audience for putting the group in a bad spotlight and for causing the fans to worry. This action caused outrage across Japan, with many accusing the management for allegedly pressuring Maho to publicly apologize. The intensity of these public reactions led to the issue making headlines globally (including major Western media such as TIME magazine in the US and the Daily Mail in the UK).
- Many other members (such as Kitahara Rie, Sashihara Rino and Yokoyama Yui) spoke up on her behalf.
- On April 30, 2019, after Maho's departure from the group, the management filed a civil lawsuit against the two assailants. An out-of-court settlement was agreed upon on April 9, 2020, with the perpetrators agreeing to pay ¥2.4 million in compensation within a five-year period. They were also banned from attending any events related to AKB48 Group, though they had already been banned from any NGT48 events shortly after the incident occurred.
